The San Diego Padres, who lost Ha-Sung Kim to a knee injury, rallied to beat the Washington Nationals behind a dramatic three-run shot by Rougned Odor.
O’Dowd’s three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning gave San Diego an 8-6 victory over the Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
San Diego improved to 23-27 after avenging a 3-5 loss the previous day (Sept. 25). They are 7.5 games behind the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (31-20).
After losing the lead in the bottom 안전놀이터 of the first inning, the Padres suffered an injury setback in the top of the second inning when Kim Ha-seong, who was batting seventh and playing third base, was struck in the left knee by a foul ball he hit and had to leave the game in excruciating pain.
The Dodgers changed their infield in response to Kim’s injury. Pinch-hitter Brandon Dixon took over at first base, first baseman Jake Cronenwirth took over at second base, and third baseman O’Dowd took over at third base.
Shortly after Kim’s injury, the Dodgers’ offense exploded. Trent Grisham hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and in the top of the fifth, the Padres scored three runs on an RBI single by Zander Bogaerts and an RBI double by O’Dowd.
But in the bottom of the seventh, the San Diego bullpen creaked and gave up five runs.
With the deficit deep, San Diego rallied in the top of the ninth. With runners on first and second, Bogaerts and Matt Carpenter drew back-to-back walks, but O’Dowd hit a three-run shot to end the game.
O’Dowd went 2-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs and one run scored in the victory.
