The winner of the Spring Camp Best Rookie Award, which is won by the San Francisco Giants every season, has been decided.
Not everyone was expecting a player.
The Giants announced in a press release on the 22nd (Korea Standard Time) that they have selected outfielder Ismael Mungua (25) as the winner of the 2024 Bani New Ghent Award.
The Barney Newgent Award is given to “the player who best demonstrated the spirit of the San Francisco Giants club through performance and dedication” among the players who first joined the big league spring camp that year.
The original award was named the Harry K. Jordan Award, but it was named after Barney Newgent, who had worked as the club’s trainer from 1993 to 2003.
The winner is decided through voting by members of the team, including the team, coaching staff, trainers, and clubhouse staff.
It can be said to be a kind of ‘Best New Artist in Spring Camp’.
In 2017, Hwang Jae-gyun, who joined the camp as an invited player at the time, received the award.
Munguia deserves this award. He has a batting average of 0.467 with an on-base percentage of 0.500 with an extra-base percentage of 0.767 in 17 games during this camp. He had two homers, eight RBIs and a double and a triple each, and displayed good performance with 13 points and four steals. 유흥알바
Munguia, a native of Nicaragua, joined the Giants on an amateur FA contract in 2015.
Last season, he played in 75 games for Double-A Richmond, recording a batting average of 0.282 on-base percentage of 0.357 with a slugging percentage of 0.391 with 6 homers, 32 RBIs and 16 steals.
Meanwhile, Lee Jung-hoo, who returned to the exhibition lineup the previous day, will not participate in an away game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
San Francisco excluded most of its key players, including Lee Jung-hoo, from the away list.
