Chairman Chung Mong-kyu explained his bid for the fourth term as president of the Korea Football Association.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee conducted a comprehensive audit of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee on Monday. Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association, attended the audit as a witness and had time to answer questions from lawmakers.
Many lawmakers, regardless of ruling and opposition parties, bombarded Chung with questions, and he only read the script he had prepared. The most talked about Chung Mong-gyu’s re-election to a fourth term.
Chung Mong-gyu ran for president of the Korea Football Association in 2013 and is currently serving his third term in office. Although Chung did not directly declare his bid for a fourth term, his preparation for a fourth term seems highly likely given his track record so far.
Chung Mong-gyu ran alone for the AFC’s executive committee on May 16, 2024, despite the continued popular development, and was elected because he was the lone candidate. Analysts say that this move is a paving the way for a fourth term. The head of a sports organization must pass the deliberation of the Korea Sports and Fair Committee from the third term in office to be challenged. Chairman Chung Mong-gyu aimed for this approach because if each head occupies the executive position of an international organization, he is more likely to pass the FTC’s deliberation.
Currently, Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yoo In-chon criticizes the abolition of the two-term limit, saying that he would not allow Chung Mong-gyu to serve his fourth term. This was confirmed during the last parliamentary audit.
Against this backdrop, the audit also asked questions about Chairman Chung Mong-gyu’s fourth consecutive term. First, Rep. Bae Hyun-jin asked the question, “He has been the president of the Korea Football Association for 11 years since 2013. Why on earth do you want to continue?”
Chairman Chung Mong-gyu, who was asked this question, replied, “First of all, I think we have to finish our term well because our term is until January next year. I will judge from various angles and review it. I have never said anywhere that I will try to win a fourth term. I will make a judgment by considering various things comprehensively.”
After that, Rep. Cho Gye-won asked, “Even the union of the Korea Football Association, which I manage, is opposed to a fourth term, and why do you intend to try the fourth term?” and Chairman Chung Mong-gyu answered, “When did I ever tell you that I would be in the fourth term?” rather confidently. 메이저놀이터
Afterwards, Cho countered, “Don’t everyone know so far? He indirectly and indirectly indicates that he will serve a fourth term so that everyone knows.” Upon hearing the comment, Chung made an absurd response, saying, “I will work hard until the last day when I am the president of the Korea Football Association.”
Last but not least, Rep. Cho asked Chairman Chung Mong-gyu’s intention, saying, “I will resign right now. Why can’t I say that I will give up trying to serve a fourth term and finish it well?” and Chairman Chung replied, “I will judge the matter on my own.”
Chairman Chung Mong-kyu has not said he will give up his fourth term until the end, hinting that the issue will turn into a long battle.
