The Korean Football Association’s National Power Reinforcement Committee carried out the first schedule under the new chairman Choi Young-il.
The committee held its first meeting at the Korea Football Association in Sinmun-ro, Seoul on Tuesday to discuss its direction of activities. In attendance were Choi, all six members of the committee, including Han Joon-hee, vice chairman of the association, Chung Jae-kwon, coach of Hanyang University, Park Chul, K-League match supervisor, Baek Jong-seok, scout for FC Seoul, and Yoo Jong-hee, executive director of the Jeonbuk Football Association.
The main agenda items were the appointment of the national women’s team and the men’s U-23 national team. The women’s team has been drifting along since Colin Bell, the England coach who had been in charge since 2019, resigned in June this year. Since then, the team has been in vain without an A-match and a call-up training. The team should appoint a head coach as soon as possible in order to make the bid for the 2026 Asian Cup in Australia and the 2027 Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
Men’s U-23 national team has not been in operation since April. Under Hwang Sun-hong (current coach of Daejeon Hana Citizen), the team ended up in the quarterfinals at the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, which was held as the final Asian qualifying round for the 2024 Paris Olympics. As the new coach, he should prepare for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games and the 2028 LA Olympics.
The committee agreed to appoint the women’s and men’s U-23 national teams by the end of September and the end of this year, respectively. The committee will make all-out efforts to appoint the women’s national team head coach first, and then continue its process to appoint the men’s U-23 national team head coach from October to December. The committee will discuss ways to support national teams at various levels until January 25 next year when their terms expire. 메이저놀이터
“In the meeting, Choi and the committee members had a comprehensive discussion on qualifications, careers and tactical styles needed to become the next head coach of the Korean women’s national team,” an association official said. “We exchanged views on when to appoint the men’s U-23 national team coach,” adding, “We will actively pursue the A-match since it is the A-match week for women’s soccer in both October and November. It is expected that more detailed discussions will be made at the next meeting to be held in early September.”
