It has been reported that Son Heung-min (32, Tottenham) has been informed by the club that he has no plans to renew his contract.
British media The Bootroom reported on the 6th (Korea Standard Time) that “Tottenham has notified Son Heung-min that there are no plans to renew the contract.”
According to the media, Son Heung-min’s side was shocked when they heard the news.
In addition, The Bootroom added, “Tottenham discussed extending the contract with Son Heung-min, but it is expected to use the option of a one-year extension included in his contract instead of further negotiations.”
Son Heung-min’s current contract expires at the end of this season. However, the contract has an option to extend it by one year. If this option is triggered, Son Heung-min will play for Tottenham until the summer of 2026.
Tottenham already seems to have found a replacement for Son Heung-min.
“Tottenham is considering Jamie Gittens (Dortmund) as Son Heung-min’s successor,” The Bootroom said.
“Dortmund is asking Tottenham for about 50 million pounds (about 90.1 billion won) to recruit Gittens,” the media said, suggesting that the cost of replacing Son Heung-min is significant.
“The absence of a new contract for Son Heung-min could mean that Mikey Moore, a former club youth player, is performing well,” he said, noting that 17-year-old Moore is also considered a replacement for Son Heung-min.
Earlier on the 4th, the British Telegraph also reported that “Tottenham is preparing to invoke Son Heung-min’s contract extension option,” adding, “The club plans to implement it as the contract with Son Heung-min can be extended by one year just by invoking the option.”
Son Heung-min, who has been with Tottenham for about 10 years, has emerged as a world-class player. Considering the reports, however, Son will have about a year and a half to play for Tottenham.
Son made his Bundesliga debut by starting his professional career with Hamburg in 2010. He displayed potential by scoring three goals in his first season in the league, and 12 goals in his second season, drawing attention. He then moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013.
Son Heung-min, who proved his outstanding scoring ability with Leverkusen, moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015. At the time, his transfer fee of 22 million pounds (about 39.6 billion won) was the highest for an Asian player.
In the 2020-2021 season, he had his best season in the Premier League with 17 goals and 10 assists. He set the league record for most joint goals with Harry Kane, and was recognized for his achievements by renewing his contract for four years in the summer of 2021. During the 2023-2024 season, he wore the Tottenham captain’s armband. 먹튀검증
However, signing a long-term contract with Son Heung-min, who is entering his mid-30s, could pose a real burden to Tottenham. Although there are criticisms that they are not giving him legendary treatment, Tottenham seems to be likely to issue a one-year extension option for Son.
