Son Heung-min honored his 50th A match goal.
The South Korean national soccer team, led by head coach Hong Myung-bo, finished the first half of the 5th match of the third Asian qualifying round for the FIFA 2026 North-China World Cup against Kuwait at 11 p.m. on the 14th (Korea time) at Jabeur Al Ahmed International Stadium in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
Son Heung-min did not join the national team during the A-match in October due to his injury and stayed at Tottenham Hotspur to focus on rehabilitation.
Son Heung-min joined Hong Myung-bo for the A-match in November after recovering from his injury and playing full-time in the 11th round of the Premier League (EPL) match against Ipswich in the 2024/25 season.
Tottenham Hotspur coach Enze Postecoglou also mentioned Son Heung-min’s physical arrangement.
Coach Postecoglou once said, “I hope Tottenham and the South Korean national team will join forces to manage Son Heung-min’s injury.”
“We want Son Heung-min to be healthy. I hope he can play for Tottenham and the Korean national team in that condition. I think there will be a way to cooperate. If that happens, both sides will get good results,” he said, asking for a physical fitness arrangement.
Coach Hong Myung-bo said there was no problem because he played full-time at Tottenham just before joining the national team.
“There are no other issues regarding the injury,” Hong said. “I think Tottenham also knew that and let him play for 90 minutes. I cannot tell you whether he will play or not.”
Son Heung-min started against Kuwait under the judgment that there was no problem. He immediately showed off his presence.
Son Heung-min drew a foul in the process of breaking through after receiving Lee Jae-sung’s pass in the 16th minute of the first half and even got a penalty kick.
South Korea widened the gap as Son Heung-min stepped up as a kicker and succeeded neatly.
Son Heung-min said in a broadcast interview after the game, “I’m so happy to win. It’s the result of the players’ hard work. You might have thought it was a game, but there’s nothing free in the world. I’m glad our efforts came out on the field.”
Son Heung-min’s goal against Kuwait led to a great record. He ranked second in the scoring history of South Korea.
Before the match against Kuwait, Son had 49 goals in 129 A-matches. If he scores one more goal, he would tie Hwang Sun-hong, who ranks second with the most goals scored in Korea’s history, but this has become a reality.

Son Heung-min said, “I am grateful to have scored many goals and received many opportunities. I am grateful to my teammates and the coaching staff who have been with me so far. I am happy to have scored a goal because the players helped me when I returned to the team after a long time. I am honored to have many people discussing it as I scored 50 goals, but I think the most important thing is today’s victory.”
“Thank you so much for your interest and protection in my team and the national team. My physical condition is so good now. I feel like I’m back to my normal condition. I’ll show you 100 percent in the next match,” he added.
