Will the women’s national soccer team solve its long-cherished dream under the new coach? Shin Sang-woo (48), the new coach of the women’s national team, is confident about the change in the national women’s team.
“Women’s soccer has not been able to advance to the World Cup and the Olympics in recent years. I will put on a new color from scratch,” Shin said at a press conference to inaugurate the women’s national soccer team coach at the Korea Football Center in Sinmun-ro, Seoul on Wednesday.

The previous women’s team was maintained for four years and four months under Colin Bell (England), the first-ever foreign coach to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Bell, the coach of the UEFA Women’s Asian Cup, led the team to second place at the 2022 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup. At the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the team had two draws and one loss. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2024 Paris Olympics failed to advance to the finals.

“I’ve been watching women’s soccer,” said Shin Sang-woo, who has been involved in men’s soccer for the past three years. “I will emphasize communication and trust among players, motivation of players and strategic tactics. I will give compliments to players more than whips. I felt motivation is important.”

On the 14th, coach Shin Sang-woo unveiled his first A-match roster since taking office. Major members including Ji So-yeon, Kim Hye-ri, and Jang Seul-ki were also included, but veteran midfielder Cho So-hyun and goalkeeper Jungmi Kim were excluded. Six new faces were selected. “We picked players according to their position. It’s not that we didn’t pick them because we had bad feelings for Cho So-hyun and Jungmi Kim. We are well aware that the players’ goals before retirement are the national team. There is also a good chance of re-recruitment.”
“It won’t be easy,” he said of the replacement of generations, the main task of the current women’s national team, but added, “I checked the skills of the players while watching the WK League. We will select good resources to motivate the players as well.” 메이저놀이터

Shin Sang-woo, who served as the head coach of Boeun Sangmu (currently Mungyeong Sangmu) of the WK League in 2015, and as the coach of Icheon Bridge and Changnyeong WFC, is known as an expert in women’s soccer. Starting in 2022, he has coached Gimcheon Sangmu, a men’s soccer team.

Coach Shin Sang-woo will make his debut in a friendly match against the Japanese women’s national team at Tokyo National Stadium on the 26th. The contract period is until the LA Olympics and will be evaluated in the interim at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
