Chung Mong-kyu, president of the Korea Football Association, passed a second term review by the Sports Fair Committee of the Korea Sports Association and was eligible to challenge for a fourth term. The Sports Council’s Sports Fair Committee approved the application for a fourth term as a result of reviewing Chairman Chung Mong-kyu for a second term at the Olympic Hall in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul on the 11th.
As a result, Chairman Chung will be able to run for the 55th president of the Korea Football Association, which will take place on January 8, 2025.
The committee will deliberate on reappointment of executives of sports associations and affiliated sports organizations. At the meeting, the committee approved Chung’s reappointment plan with the majority vote. Under the current association’s articles of association, executives of sports associations and affiliated sports organizations can serve consecutive terms only once. However, the committee has an exception clause that allows them to seek a third term or higher if they make clear financial contributions, performance at major international competitions or group evaluations.
For Chairman Chung, the results of the Korea Sports Fair Trade Commission were the first and biggest gateway to the fourth term challenge, and they passed it.
Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yoo In-chon attended a plenary session of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee in August and said, “Basically, it’s not possible, but it can be done if the Sports Fair Committee of the Korea Sports Council approves it. However, the ministry’s audit briefing released in October showed its intention to avoid direct involvement in issues within the federation as much as possible, while pointing out its wrongdoings. It appeared to be aimed at minimizing political intervention in sports and minimizing suspicions of overstepping authority as much as possible.
In the end, the ministry could not exert more coercion than it wanted to exert self-destructive effect on the cooperative, and Chung, who had run the cooperative under “imperial rule,” could not accept the ministry’s advice. Meanwhile, the election to head the Korea Football Association will be a three-way race between current chairman Chung Mong-gyu, former national soccer team coach Huh Jung-moo and Professor Shin Moon-sun of Myongji University, who are seeking a fourth consecutive term. The competition was fierce only when the KFA took office in 2013, but Chung, who was always elected as a “single candidate” in the second and third term, is facing a competitor for the first time in a long time.
