Hwang Hee-chan continued his rise with his second assist of the season, but his club Wolverhampton hung their heads. Wolverhampton Wanderers will be disappointed with an unexpected defeat at promoted Sheffield United.
Wolverhampton fell 1-2 to Sheffield United in the 11th round of the 2023/24 Premier League at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England, on Friday.
Hwang Hee-chan, who started the match on the road, recorded his second assist of the season, but it was not enough to prevent his team from losing and will now look to win their next game.
The loss leaves Wolverhampton with three wins, three draws, and five defeats (12 points), moving them up from 13th place in the league standings. Sheffield Wednesday (P4), meanwhile, picked up their first win since being promoted to the Premier League this season to move to 1-1-1 and 9 points (P4). Fellow promoted side Burnley (P4) were unable to move off the bottom of the table on goal difference.
Wolverhampton opted to play a 3-4-3 on the day. Yohan Gueye got the goalkeeping gloves, while Totti Gomes, Craig Dawson, and Maximilian Kilman formed the back three. Layan Aitnouri and Nelson Semedou were the left and right wing-backs, with Tommy Doyle and Mario Lemina in the middle. Hwang Hee-chan, Sasha Kalajic, and Mateusz Cunha completed the front three.
Wolverhampton took to the field without the services of Pedro Neto, who had been in top form on the day, assisting on three of Hwang’s six Premier League goals, due to a hamstring injury. In place of the injured Neto, Wolverhampton opted to play 6-foot-2 striker Kalajic up front, with Hwang and Cunha partnering up front.
The home side Sheffield countered with a 3-5-2. Wes Fordringham is in goal, while Jack Robinson, Auston Trusty, and George Baldock make up the back three. Luke Thomas and Jaden Vogl are the wing-backs, while Gustavo Hamer, Oliver Norwood, and Vinicius de Souza Costa make up the midfield. Up front, Cameron Archer and Rhian Brewster started.
Early in the first half, Wolverhampton went on the attack. Hwang Hee-Chan filled Neto’s shoes by starting on the right wing in this match, as opposed to the left winger he was used to when Neto was on the bench. In the center, Kalajic and Cunha tried to shake up the defense with switching plays. Hwang Hee-chan led the attack on the right, utilizing Semedo’s overlapping runs.
Hwang Hee-chan attacked the opposition from the start with her breakaway and good movement. In the 11th minute, during a 2-on-1 pass with Semedo, Hwang delivered a pass that created space for Semedo to shoot, but Semedo’s shot flew into the crowd instead of the goal. In the 16th minute, Hwang made a daring move to steal the ball from the opposing defense inside the penalty box and sent a cross that was blocked by the defense.
Hwang Hee-chan’s breakthrough was followed up by a great finish from the offense. In the 25th minute, Hwang played a 2-on-1 pass with Kalajic on the right side of the field to break the pressure, then moved to the front of the penalty box arc and laid the ball off to Cunha, who was breaking in from the right. Cunha immediately took a shot, which unfortunately sailed over the bar. 무지개토토
