Baseball’s LG Twins are one win away from their first championship in 29 years.
LG defeated the KT Wiz 15-4 in the fourth game of the best-of-seven 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League Korean Series at Katie Wiz Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, on Nov. 11 behind a dominant pitching performance by starter Kim Yoon-sik and a home run show by the batters.
LG, which dropped Games 2-4 after losing Game 1, leads the series 3-1 and needs just one win in Games 5-7 at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul to lift its first Korean Series title in 29 years, since 1994.
The team with a 3-1 series lead has won 16 of 17 times in the history of the Korean Series, a staggering 94 percent of the time.
LG’s powerhouse lineup puts on a home run show… KT’s mound ‘roars’
LG, whose starting pitchers struggled in Games 1-3, got a much-needed boost from Kim Yoon-sik, who got the start.
After working the count with his slow curveball and changeup, Kim Yun-sik took away his opponent’s timing with a bold fastball, giving up one run on three hits in 5.2 innings to earn his first win in the Korean Series for both teams.
KT, on the other hand, was pushed to the brink as their starting pitching staff collapsed and they went all out to bring in the bullpen even when they were down, but they were unable to withstand the power of LG’s bats.
LG, which came from behind to win Games 2 and 3 with a dramatic home run, struck first in the top of the first inning as Park Hae-min led off with a single and then Kim Hyun-soo took Uhm’s changeup over the right field fence.
KT threw reliever Kim Jae-yoon into the game in the fifth inning, but LG didn’t hesitate to capitalize on Hong Chang-ki’s RBI single and Moon Bo-kyung’s two-run double. 보스토토
In the top of the seventh, Oh Ji-hwan blasted a three-run homer off KT reliever Joo Ju-kwon. Moon Sung-joo, who had been in a slump in the Korean Series, hit a two-run triple to cap off a seven-run “big inning” that forced KT to surrender.
LG pounded out 17 hits, including hits by Kim Min-seok and Heo Do-hwan, who came in as pinch-hitters, to sweep both games in enemy territory.
LG also set a number of records in the process. With three RBIs on the day, including a two-run shot, Kim Hyun-soo now has 45 RBIs in the postseason, surpassing SSG Landers’ Choi Jung (43) for the top spot in that category.
Also, with his three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning in the 6-1 win, Oh Ji-hwan set a new record for the most consecutive home runs in a single Korean Series by homering in Games 2-4.
With eight RBIs in the series, including a miraculous come-from-behind triple in the top of the ninth inning of Game 3 the previous day, the “Captain” of the LG squad has emerged as a strong Most Valuable Player (MVP) candidate.
