Vietnam, led by head coach Kim Sang-sik, has advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Cup of the Association of Southeast Asian Football Associations (AFF). He is the only Korean head coach who participates in this year’s event to win the title at the tournament.
Vietnam defeated Myanmar 5-0 in the final Group B match of the tournament held at Puto Stadium in Puto Vietchi, Vietnam, on the 21st (Korea time) and advanced to the semifinals as No. 1 in Group B. The group’s performance is 10 points (3 wins and 1 draw).
Vietnam finished the first half without a goal against Myanmar, but scored a relay goal starting with Bui Bihao’s first goal in the third minute of the second half, completely destroying the opponent’s defense and achieving a landslide victory. In the FIFA rankings, Vietnam ranks 114th and Myanmar 169th.
Vietnam is now at the top of Group B and will have a showdown with Singapore, the second-ranked team in Group A, for the semifinal. Thailand and the Philippines will have a showdown in the semifinal. Both the semifinal and the final are played home and away.
Among the Korean coaches in this tournament, only Vietnam, led by head coach Kim Sang-sik, was the only one to advance to the tournament.
Indonesia, led by head coach Shin Tae-yong, failed to advance to the tournament by ranking third in Group B with four points (1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses) after losing 0-1 to the Philippines in the final group match. “Ha Hyuk Jun-ho” Laos was also eliminated from the group league as the lowest in Group B with only two points (two draws and two losses).
The Mitsubishi Cup 메이저놀이터 is the most prestigious competition in Southeast Asian soccer, called the World Cup in Southeast Asia, hosted by AFF every two years, and Vietnam, which was led by “Park Hang-seo Magic,” led Vietnam to the top in 2018 and is receiving a lot of attention in Korea. It was called the AFF Suzuki Cup until 2020 after the sponsor of the tournament, and it became the Mitsubishi Cup from 2022.
After Park Hang-seo-ho Vietnam won the top of the tournament in 2018, Shin Tae-yong-ho Indonesia won the second place in 2020, and Park Hang-seo-ho Vietnam won the 2022 tournament.
